Chronic Visceral Pain and Functional Diseases

Email: [email protected] Abstract: A functional disorder is a medical condition that impairs the normal physiological function of organs without organic cause such as inflammation. The accumulation of abnormalities that limit body functions is a major risk factor for patients with functional disorders such as Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS), Chronic Pelvic Pain (CPP), Painful Bladder Syndrome (PBS) and others. Often, functional disorders co-morbid by the concomitant decline in cognitive or motor performance. Chronic visceral pain is the most immediate and dramatic consequence of functional disorders and is responsible for a very negative impact on quality of life. Interestingly, for patients with IBS, the most common co-morbid diagnoses include PBS or CPP. The complex interplay and co-morbidity between these disorders, aging, genetic and environmental factors may determine the outcome of the progression of the therapy.

Spinal microglia: A potential target in the treatment of chronic visceral pain.
Chronic visceral pain is the predominant symptom of functional gastrointestinal disorders and chronic pancreatitis. Such pain can impair the patients' quality of life, and can also serve as one of the principal reasons for these patients to seek medical help. Nevertheless, the underlying mechanisms of chronic visceral pain have remained unclear, and much of what we know about visceral pain has ...

متن کاملMechanisms of Chronic Pain in Functional Abdominal Pain
Visceral pain is prevalent and is a leading cause of health care utilization worldwide.1 Unexplained abdominal pain is the sixth most common cause of hospital admission for any cause in women and the tenth most common cause in men.2 In the United Kingdom, it has been estimated that nonspecific abdominal pain costs the economy in excess of £100 million per annum.3 Functional abdominal pain (FAP)...
متن کاملDifferential effects of amitriptyline on perception of somatic and visceral stimulation in healthy humans.
Tricyclic antidepressants treat chronic pain both in patients with somatic illness and with functional bowel disorders. We compared the effects of amitriptyline on perception of cutaneous and gastrointestinal stimulation to assess differential analgesic effects of tricyclics on somatic and visceral pain. Cutaneous electrical stimulation and rectal and esophageal distension were performed before...
متن کاملHistone hyperacetylation modulates spinal type II metabotropic glutamate receptor alleviating stress-induced visceral hypersensitivity in female rats
Stress is often a trigger to exacerbate chronic pain including visceral hypersensitivity associated with irritable bowel syndrome, a female predominant functional bowel disorder. Epigenetic mechanisms that mediate stress responses are a potential target to interfere with visceral pain. The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of a histone deacetylase inhibitor, suberoylanilide hydrox...
